In the world of fast food and fast news, people are used to getting what they want as quickly as possible. As we have discussed before, images are an inseparable part of the success of your website.
However, there are some ground rules on how to properly use them in order to get the most out of your visual content.
1.Choose the right images
Selecting the proper images is not an easy task but it’s definitely something you shouldn’t neglect.
Every image on your website should be there for a reason. You cannot use any image and hope it will work. To help you out a bit, we’ve made this short checklist for choosing proper images:
- The image complements the written content of the page.
- It supports the point I’m trying to make.
- This image is related to my brand identity.
There are many places where you can find high-quality photos or cartoon-style pictures for free or for a certain price. Don’t forget to give credit to the author if you decide to go with the unpaid version.
Tip: A rule of thumb is that the visual content you choose to use should look natural. Every photo with too big of a smile on a person visiting their doctor, for example, will just make seem as if you hadn’t put much thought into it.
2.Edit the images to match your style
Each company has their unique brand identity. As we mentioned above, the pictures you put on your website should belong to this identity.
If you want to do that on stock images, you can use online software, such as www.canva.com, www.pixlr.com, or www.gimp.org. With this free online photo editors, you can completely change the look of the pictures so they match your style.
Tip: In case you need to resize the image or just apply a filter to it, you can do it quickly using the Microsoft Office PowerPoint on your computer.
3.Optimize the images
Since images are an essential part of your website, you should also consider the way they affect its technical side and SEO.
First of all, you have to use the proper image file type. The most common file types are .jpg, .png, and .gif. Make sure you are using one of these.
Another important part of your image optimization is the image size. Most high-quality images take up a lot of space on your website. This will affect the loading time of your pages which might make people leave and, of course, you don’t want this to happen.
Tip: To reduce the size of your images, you can use online tools like www.tinypng.com or similar.
Images are a powerful way to improve the user experience on your website. But as we already said, not all of them work.
Using them properly on your website can bring you a lot of benefits such as increasing the conversion rate and boosting traffic.
